Franciscan Friary Lichfield

The Franciscan Friary was once a large estate located on the west side of Lichfield city centre in Staffordshire. The estate was built and inhabited by the Franciscan Friars from 1237.   At one time the estate consisted of a large church, a cloister, dormitory lodge and a refectory building as well as many other domestic dwellings.

Henry VIII ordered the dissolution of the Friary in 1538 and the majority of the buildings on the estate were demolished.
Today the site of the Friary is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and the excavated ruins of some of the original buildings are visible in the specially designated site. The only original buildings still standing are present at the south west end of Lichfield Library.

Episcopal & Diaconal Ordinations

Saturday 25th August 2012 was a very special day in the life of our church, both locally and Internationally.  Firstly, Mother Maria Francesca of our Liverpool based Franciscan Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament was ordained to the Diaconate.
Supported by her sisters in religion Sr Maria Clare and Sr Maria Solanus, she was ordained alongside Rev Christopher Nieciag from our sister community in Poland.

The Episcopal ordination of +Szymon Niemiec followed with many members of our UK and Polish communities present, to witness the event.  +Szymon was elected to serve as Bishop by the support of members of the “United Christian Church in Poland.”
A blessed time for our Polish brothers and Sisters, as having their own Bishop will allow further expansion of their communities throughout Poland.  Bishop Terry Flynn being principle consecrator was supported by, +Roger Whately and +Richard Palmer.

It was a wonderful occasion, meeting our brothers and sisters from Poland.  We hope to be able to make a return visit  to meet in Poland soon, perhaps in 2014 after Synod 2013 in Sydney Australia.
We also wish our Polish brothers and sisters every blessing for a fruitful growth in their congregation and ministry. Special thanks to all at Christ Church Milton United Reform Church, Portsmouth.

MARIA : Guido Detoni della Grazia

A friend came across an exhibition of the work of Guido Detoni della Grazia at a church in Assisi.  I can see why she was impressed with the work MARIA.  Have a look at the video which is in Italian.  An English version is available by clicking here and selecting "Eng" directly below the video. A Pdf file explaining the artwork can be found here.

What a gift to receive just before celebrating Mass on the vigil of the Assumption.  Simple, uncomplicated yet profoundly contemplative.  A wonderful gift of Mary who "pondered all these things in her heart." (Lk:2:19)
